Degree of Unsaturation Calculator
Calculate the combined number of rings and π-bond equivalents in a conventional neutral organic formula.
01 Set up your calculation
- Enter the counts from one molecular formula, not reaction coefficients.
- Combine all halogen atoms into one count.
- Read the total ring and multiple-bond equivalents; oxygen does not change this conventional count.
02 The relationship
For the assumptions behind these results, read the explanation below. You can also explore Molar Mass and Percent Composition.
Follow the numbers
For C₆H₆, DoU = (2 × 6 + 2 − 6)/2 = 4. Benzene accounts for this as one ring plus three double bonds.
03 A count of missing hydrogen pairs
A saturated, acyclic hydrocarbon has the reference hydrogen count 2C + 2. A ring or double bond removes one pair of hydrogens relative to that reference, while a triple bond removes two pairs. Nitrogen and halogens alter the reference valence balance.
Oxygen and ordinary divalent sulfur do not appear in this formula. The tool assumes conventional valences and a neutral closed-shell molecule; unusual oxidation states, radicals, ions, and some organometallic compounds require separate analysis.
04 Use the result to narrow structures
The degree of unsaturation constrains possible structures without uniquely identifying one. A value of two could mean two double bonds, two rings, a ring and a double bond, or one triple bond.
A negative or half-integer result is rejected under this tool’s stated model. First check the molecular formula, hydrogen count, halogen total, and charge rather than rounding the result to a plausible integer.
Questions from the notebook
Does this identify aromaticity?
No. Aromaticity also depends on cyclic conjugation, electron count, and geometry.
Why are oxygen atoms omitted?
A conventional divalent oxygen can be inserted without changing the hydrogen deficit used by this valence count.
Can an empirical formula be used?
Use the actual molecular formula. A reduced empirical formula may give a different and misleading count.
